CHARACTER INFO
Name: Randall Ascot
Gender: Male
Source: Professor Layton (in-game canon : set BEFORE Randall and Hersh’s ‘trip’ to Akdabain)
Canon point: Randall receives two odd discs in the mail – in a letter ‘apparently’ from Hershel (it is a fake letter not really from Hershel at all, but Randall doesn't know this yet) - shortly after showing the Mask of Chaos to Hershel and Angela. Always up for adventure, he checks them out…
Age: 15
Colour: # CC3232
Chumhandle: gingerArcheologist [GA] – Types in a fairly normal manner, but has a bad habit of overusing exclamation points!!! When very excited, may start TALKING IN ALL CAPITALS WOW RUINS ARE AWESOME.
He has the tendency to give EVERYONE he meets nicknames – for example, Hershel is called ‘Hersh’ by him.
History: ((Roleplayer’s note: This Randall is played from a specific point in-canon to prevent too many spoilers for Mask of Miracles for those whom haven’t played it. BUT THERE STILL ARE SPOILERS here SO TREAD WITH CARE.))
In the small town of Stansbury, there was an incredibly rich family known as the Ascots. A husband and wife who had earnt a lot of money through hard work and perseverance, the birth of a son from the wife took them both by surprise: the husband, in all honesty, didn’t want to have an ‘heir’ having to be forced onto the Ascot fortunes so soon. As such, his inner worry and fretting on the subject meant he was somewhat cold and aloof seeming towards the boy before he could even do much, but the mother was happy and was oblivious to her husband's actions, mostly.
Though, the child did not ignore it, and was very aware when he got old enough. In fact, he felt determined to have his father 'appreciate' what he did, and so decided at a young age to become a ‘great adventurer and archaeologist’ like his father had once been. In these efforts, he found a genuine joy for the subject and started doing it more because it was fun, seeing as no matter what he did, his father seemed to ignore it. Still, it was lonely. Though, a new ‘servant’ being inducted into the Ascot household changed that – he and the boy, named Henry Ledore, becoming very close friends thanks to Randall being so kind to him.
He then proceeded to meet a girl called Angela, and was childhood friends with her for a long time before they actually fell in love with one another, becoming girlfriend and boyfriend. Yet the father STILL didn’t pay Randall much heed in the ginger's view, seeming to appreciate the servant (soon becoming ‘butler’) Henry more than his own child. In fact, Angela's parents didn't approve of him hanging around 'their' daughter either, dismissing him as nothing more than a dreamer with his head in the clouds.
This frustrated Randall to no end - but he shoved such thoughts to the back of his mind, just because he enjoyed the subject of archaeology, and he had better things to do, like prove that he was worthy of Angela- though the fact he never seemed to measure up in his father’s eyes would always be a secret worry and deep issue in the back of his mind.
In his teenage years, Randall met Hershel Layton, who had recently moved to Stansbury, and was studying at Randall’s school, Saint Burns High School. Randall befriended the young lad very easily despite them being total opposites, and they became best friends! He repeatedly tried to interest Layton in archaeology, though Hershel consistently said he wasn't interested (though he’d never say to Randall he actually DID enjoy being dragged along on those constant adventures.)
Soon after, Randall somehow found an ancient treasure first discovered by an explorer centuries before. He was proud of his accomplishment, and brought Layton and Sharon to his house, where he showed them the treasure and a huge diagram drawn on his bedroom wall which translated the ‘cipher’ of a great mystery and held directions to some fabled ruins. It was at this point – before he could investigate these ruins – he received a letter from his best friend, Hershel. (However, said letter was faked and not really from him, but Randall did not know this.) Speaking of a ‘game’ called that had been released and asking the ginger to help him with it…and that was how the archaeology nut got dragged into the whole mess!
Personality: Despite not being anywhere NEAR the level of ‘gentlemanly’ behaviour as his best friend Hershel is, which is bluntly obvious on first meeting him, Randall is generally friendly and nice - a genuinely fun person to be around most the time. Perhaps reflective of his burning ambition and his bright orange hair, he is also very outgoing, and his ‘negative’ points are most often people complaining that he is reckless and headstrong. This is dead right. He acts on spur of the moment, without even thinking, but he always seems to have good reasons in his heart for doing so. As a result of this, he can make really, REALLY dumb choices ((DROP THAT FUCKING MASK AND TAKE HIS HAND YOU IDIOT DORK)) that land him in a lot of hot water. Another bad point of his is he never seems to STAND STILL for long.
He is quite impulsive, another clear display of the fact he is still somewhat of a child age-wise, and a little unforgiving at times regarding wrongs done to friends he holds dear or himself, often butting his head into MORE dangerous situations because of this. The ginger is also quite playful and likes to tease people, but he’s pretty good-natured with it and usually doesn't go too far with it. Despite the fact he has yet to become truly 'famous' in archaeology, he tends to boast sometimes on things he’s done, yet his underlying kindness makes it easy to forgive him for that, usually.
Speaking of that underlying kindness, it means he makes friends rather easily due to how out-going and naturally friendly he is, that’s for certain. Though, he probably places too much trust in people he shouldn’t, sometimes.
Abilities & physical limitations: Is the best fencer in his class – therefore, he KNOWS how to swordfight, and is capable of all kinds of moves that usually only skilled players would be able to do due to all those years of practice: however, due to this skill in short-range weapons, he is completely useless with long-range things and spotting foes from afar. The fact he tends to rush into situations – doing, THEN thinking – doesn’t really help sometimes, either. As a young lad, he’s capable of quite agile moves and acrobatic affairs, though he might get too cocky with movements and then over-strain himself.

Notable AU differences from canon, if applicable: None!
Strife Specibus: Uses swords – therefore – Bladekind. Later on, if he gets God Tier, he will be able to use exploding pies as a weapon too – therefore Piekind.
Prototyping: An Aztec statuette.

Title: Jester of Illusion
In-game abilities: Once Randall actually realizes that he shouldn’t worry so much about trying to be ‘appreciated’ by his father – that he is a great person on his own and doesn’t really need to change anything, despite his inner worries on the subject, he will unlock his abilities. Randall is able to grow wings and fly through the air, making travel much easier – though learning how to use the wings properly will take some time. Also growing them will always be as painful as heck.
As the name implies – the specific ‘power’ granted by his God Tier is to create illusions, grand ‘magician’s tricks’ of fancy: he can make an exact replica of anything, right down to the smallest detail, thanks to these illusions – which is wonderful for distracting and tricking enemies. However, it’s not a perfect power: if attacked, the illusions fade away into nothingness, revealing themselves for the ‘magic tricks’ they are.
The ‘Jester’ part of the title is the main reason Randall should not worry about his father’s appreciation – like a jester, he cheers so many people and helps them to be optimistic, so THAT is what makes him great. Another point to make is that as this god tier, Randall is able to summon cream pies as a weapon that explode on hitting an enemy.
However, he may toss harmless versions of these pies at himself or pals to be cheeky. Be warned!!!
Planet: The Land Of Depths and Masks (LODAM) doesn’t appear to be a place where ANYONE can live at first – a dry, dusty desert of a planet with huge cracks and ravines all over the place. There’s constantly the danger of falling down one of these said holes – careful where you walk. However, some ravines have stairs on the side, leading down into the earth, where the RED SNAKES that inhabit the planet make their home. These snakes all appear to have…strange masks stuck on their faces so you can’t see their true faces, much like the Mask of Chaos. Masks also are stuck in the sides of the ravines.
The snakes explain that the denizen MEDUSA has been forcing them to live underground, she residing in the ONLY building on top of the planet, because years of living on the planet have made her even more ugly and monstrous in looks, and this makes her angry. Snakes cannot survive in cold for long, so something must be done. If only a hero of cheer could create the illusion that she is still ‘beautiful’, and thus convince her to let the snakes live above ground again…
RP Sample: The familiar voice was indeed heard, but actually waking up was another story altogether! Thankfully, the nudge to his shoulder managed to greatly assist in stirring him awake, and the ginger snapped his eyes open before yawning and rummaging around for wherever his glasses were. (Okay, he didn’t NEED to wear them. It was just habit to put them back on when they fell off, though! He found himself almost reaching for his ascot, too, but reminded himself it was already on, then blearily opening eyes to see Henry worrying for him falling asleep ‘in the cold’.)
“Me, catch cold? Aw, c’mon, Henry! I've been exploring in all sorts of conditions, haven’t I? I'm not going to get sick that easily!” With a determined smirk on his face, he stood up (albeit still a little groggily). Really, Henry worried a bit too much sometimes. That apparently had not changed in the future, most amusingly. Did Angela worry that much, too, STILL? Ah, he couldn't know.
Nonetheless, despite the confident statement, the item he’d found recently was quite prominent on his mind, and he looked around a little - there was nobody else here.“Listen, Henry. I've got something really important I need to talk to you about, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to yap about it here! Meet me back in my room, okay? Don’t let dad or mom see you!!” A pause, before he realized he should add - as much as he wanted to let Hershel or Angie in on this right away too - “Don’t let Angie or Hersh see, either. It might sound really weird, but just trust me on this, okay?” After all, Henry deserved to see the Mask of Chaos before anyone else, right??
